We Model That Peace in Our Welcome and Calm

Dear Family of Christ,

Dear Christ Church friends and family,

Pencils are one of my odd obsessions. Give me a Palomino Blackwing with a replaceable gold ferule and that subtle grey hue with a long point and a clean sheet of paper, and I am a happy man. (I know, it’s weird.)

So every year, I get excited about the beginning of school, though it has been a few years since I toted a bag of books, paper, and new pencils home because they were assigned.

As school cranks up for our families in the midst of all of these natural and unnatural disasters in the news, our homes can feel as chaotic as the world on the news. But we are reminded that many schools and families are not cranking up in the same way around the country and the world.

The formation of our children is so important here at CCA, where our teachers, Julie Lyons, and the staff can take our faith and make it accessible to our youngest members.

A big part of that faith is best put by Paul in Romans 5:1, “Since we are justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” We form children and youth in that faith by offering a place of peace in our worship, our classes, and our service. We model that peace in our welcome and calm, loving presence.

All of us are part of that formation. But this week we will celebrate our teachers who take up the mantle of service for us in classes for our Family Ministries. They give up sermons and songs, prayers and even the peace on Sunday mornings to be with our children, making real our faith for them. Be with us as we thank them and commission them for their work this year at the 10:15 am service on Sunday.

As we celebrate our children and stock them with good pencils and paper, also remember those who are entering this school year in difficult circumstances and give generously here to your home parish and to ministries like Episcopal Relief and Development that are bringing a little peace to the chaos of those who need it.

In Christ,
