Education at Christ Church of the Ascension
Whether you are new to Christ Church, new to the Christian faith, a long-time Episcopalian, or simply interest in growing your knowledge of the church, these classes are for you!
The next Newcomers Class will begin in May 2014. Fr. Phil leads the class on Wednesday nights for 5 weeks in the Teen Center.
Each class covers one of the Four Foundations of our church: Worship, Service, Giving, and Education. Please join us for some fun and enlightening classes.
The Christ Church of the Ascension Women’s Bible Study (WBS) is open to all women. This group meets on Thursdays, September through May, from 10-11AM in the Teen Center. The leader(s) select which Book(s) of the Bible will be discussed. The group is presented with Biblical texts and also with scholars’ approaches to these texts. The women are then encouraged to discuss how these Biblical texts speak to each in her own life as well as in the broader contemporary culture.
Education for Ministry Begins Monday, September 14th @ 6 pm!
Education for Ministry at Christ Church of the Ascension focuses on church history from about 100AD until about 1700AD. We meet Monday evenings from 6:00 until 9:00. There are several openings available. Individuals who have completed the first and second years of EFM are invited to join us. For more information, please contact Duane Hoole or the church office at 602-840-8210. This opportunity is open to people from other churches, denominations, and religious backgrounds.
Education for Ministry (EFM) is a program of Christian theological education-at-a-distance of the School of Theology of the University of the South. Students sign up one year at a time for this four-year adult class. About half the class time is devoted to an academic study of the Old and New Testaments, church history, liturgy, and theology. (There are no tests, no papers due.) The other half of our time, we delve into discussions covering many topics generated by the class. Students meet once a week under the guidance of trained mentors.
Eating dinner together…studying the Bible together…praying and playing. That's what we do at the CCAAZ youth group. Why do we do it? Because we want to become more faithful and joyful followers of Jesus, together.
Anyone in grades 9th-12th is welcome to join us. Bring a friend! We meet in the Teen Center. Time each week is 6:30-8:15 p.m.
We welcome students to learn what it means to be connected to Jesus Christ by gaining a better understanding of God’s Word and what it can look like to be a disciple for His purposes. We encourage students to connect with each other by providing opportunities to work together on activities, outreach, and fellowship.
Sunday mornings we meet in the Teen Center for Youth Sunday School.
Join us in the Teen Center each Wednesday night from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. for a light meal, fun games with new friends, and to learn about Jesus!

Acolytes play an integral role in the worship services at CCA. Acolytes lead the procession into worship by carrying the crucifix, the torches, and the Gospel Book. When the Mass has ended, the acolytes lead the congregation out into the world.
Our Sunday School is a place where children can count on being heard, being loved, and having their spiritual lives taken seriously. Every week we explore a Bible lesson and share in activities that coordinate with our story.
Through worship, study, fellowship and service, Sunday School plants the seed of God's Word into children's hearts, models Jesus' love through a team of devoted volunteers, and helps cultivate a lasting relationship with God.
Sunday School begins at 10:15 a.m. for children 4 years through 12th grade (Labor Day through Memorial Day). We encourage families to worship together during June, July, and August.
PreK-12th grade Sunday School classes are offered in the following classrooms:
Ascension Chapel | Shepherds | PreK - Kindergarten
Library | Prophets | 1st-3rd Grades
West Side of Teen Center | Apostles | 4th-6th Grades
East Side of Teen Center | Disciples | Jr and Sr High Classes
- All children are brought to the worship service at the Peace.
- Parents and grandparents are welcome to join us, or they may go to the worship service after signing in their children.
The Nursery is an extension of the loving atmosphere that all children experience at Christ Church. Infants and toddlers share time in imaginative play and simple Bible stories. The Nursery is open to children birth through 3 years of age beginning at 10:00 a.m. every Sunday.
Children are brought into the church to share communion with their parents. Infants and toddlers then remain in the church for the remainder of the worship service.
Men's Lunch Book Discussion
We are currently reading and discussing Adam’s Return: The Five Promises of Male Initiation by Richard Rohr. The book is available in the Book & Gift Shop, or you can purchase it through the usual online sources. Please bring a lunch and meet us in the Teen Center..

Women's Bible Study
This fall we are studying the book of Romans. While a critical scholars’ approach to the texts begins our class, we always try to end by asking how the Biblical texts speak to us in our own lives and contemporary context.
